Emergency plan to be released

CAUGHT BETWEEN sitting on an earthquake fault and
looking down onto a well-travelted dangerous goods route,
many North Vancouver residents may prefer to simply close
their eyes and cross their fingers.

But residents shouldn't wait for
a disaster before forming an
emergency response plan, said
North Vancouver City Ald. Bar-
bara Sharp.

“We should look towards
preventative medicine instead, as
opposed to being caught short,’
she said.

volves all three municipalities on
the North Shore, won't be ready
for several wecks.

But upon its release, Sharp said
it’s important the public knows
what to do in the event of a
disaster.

““We really don’t have much (in-
formation) out there now,” said
Sharp, adding that the Emergency
Program planning committee
wants to produce a leaflet for the
general public.

Sharp said that most districts in
Canada either don’t have a disaster
plan or are in the process of put-
ting one together. ‘‘All across
Canada (they) are in similar situa-
tions,’’ said Sharp.

Two recent emergencies in
Lower Lonsdale indicate the need
for an Emergency Plan, said
Sharp, referring to the 1986 explo-
sion of propane tanks at a local
gas station and local grain elevator
fires.

residents how to prepare for a
limited nuclear attack by outlining
how and where to build fallout
shelters and how to stock them.

Sharp said the current network
of emergency response systems will
be a good base on which to build
the Emergency Plan.
