FRENCH IN NV SCHOOLS Immersion solution proposed Bus rodeo date corrected INCORRECT information contained in a North Shore bus drivers’ bus rodeo press release printed in the May 1 issue of the News stated the rodeo would take place May 3. The rodeo will, in fact, be held May 10 at the West Van Transit Centre starting at 9 a.m. THE NORTH Vancouver school district’s administration presented a potential solution to the French Immersion crisis at Tuesday’s board meeting. : Associate superintendent Robin Brayne told the board that a French Immersion class could be started at the Brooksbank Elemen- tary. school this fall to relieve crowding at the Ross Road school, which now takes all immersion students from east of the Seymour River. Brayne said one kindergarten class could be held at Brooksbank in 1987-88, and im- mersion. kindergarten classes at Ross Road could be reduced by one. Over a period of two years this shifting of. students to Brooksbank will reduce the strain on Ross Road, Brayne said. Board trustee Don Bell said he was disappointed that the propos- ed solution would ‘not solve the Ross Road crowding problem in 1987-88. ‘‘It’s a compromise, and I guess it’s acceptable,’’ Bell said. The proposal depends upon North Vancouver District conti- nuing to allow the school district to have a portable trailer on the Ross Road school grounds, Brayne said. School board chairman Roy Dungey said if the district refused immersion to allow the trailer ‘‘we may have to take action in the future.” Space for French Immersion courses became a problem in the last year because only some schools offer the program and as it increased in size these schools have had difficulty finding classroom space. Traffic congestion caused by parents driving their children to French Immersion classes has also caused problems.
