' The open house and a craft sale will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 20 and 21 The centre is located in St. An- drew’s auditorium at lith and St. Georges in North Vancouver, and is part of the long term care home support system. Its program is in- - tended to serve residents of North. . ‘and West Vancouver who, because of chronic physical, mental or sen- sory impairment; cannot —par- ticipate in usual social activities. These’ people’ may become _ isolated from the community and at risk of further deterioration in health. Their impairments may in- clude: stroke, severe hearing or vi- sion’ loss, _Parkinson’s disease, depression, memory loss, brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or frailty of age. ORGANIZED PROGRAM | Adult day care provides personal assistance, nursing supervision and an organized program of health, social and recreational activities in a protective group setting. In addi- tion the centre offers respite for care-giving families: while their rel- ative is attending the program, one or two days a week, ; *. Especially when members of the care-giving family have to work, many seniors face a long day in . isolaticn -— a.situation fraught with potential, physical: and ~: psychological dangers. a .- The day care centre alleviates this problem by, offering much ‘needed social and. recreation activi- ties. A program of exercises, games, crafts, “music, singing, reading and entertainment is pro- - vided, and is tailored to each iadi- vidual’s wishes and abilities. Over a period of time, the centre ‘helps participating members regain their sense of self-worth which has often been damaged or destroved . by physical or mental impairment. SPECIAL DIETS One particularly popular part of the program is the nutritious acon meal that caters to special diets and is served in a family-like at- - mosphere . _* he centre serves North Shore residents from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove and is open Monday to Friday. Members may come once or several times a week. Funding for the centre is pro- vided through the provincial gov- © ernment and the three municipal governments. A daily fee of $4 is - normally charged to members. Program staff includes a nurse who helps with the management of physical handicaps, medications and other special needs. A social worker is also available for con- sultation and referrals for members and families. If neces- sary, transportation can be pro- vided using Handydart and volun- teer drivers.
