The North American Soc-
cer League in the past two
seasons has gone through
considerable change. The
expansion of 197& had taken
the League to 24 teams By
1980 it was slipping
backwards again — to 21. to
lo, and now 14. Who knows
whether it will become
tewer? What the smaller
numbers does 1s this. It br-
ings a position of strength in
the League rather than a
predominance of weaklings

So the regular NASL
season of 19&2 gives the very
best schedule that the Van-
couver Whitecaps have ever
seen in their short history in
the League The New York
Cosmos. the Chicago Sting.
the Tampa Bay Rowdhes. the
Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Le
Nouveau “flank de Mon

Whitecaps are hke the Bank
of England. Our Club is as
good as its Reserves. With a
young Canadian talent
pushing through it gives us
even greater cause for op-
timism.

So. with the season

embellished by our first
Tournaments — The Spring
Cup and Europac, involving
some of the great teams of
the world (Malmo. Man-
chester United and hopefully
Red Star Belgrade) it pro-
mises to be one of the most
interesting and = exciting
seasons in the nine year

history of the Whitecaps.
