B8-Wednesday, Ociober 29, 1980 - North Shore News es by Andy Fraser Yankee invasion coming If British Columbia is the leader in soccer across the continent, then why are those thousands of soccer playing Americans massing at the Washington border? This weekend, the second half of the Seattle soccer exchange hits the lower mainiand, dovetailing with the United States - Canada World Cup preliminary match on Saturday at 1 pm. Remember when the BC teams would go down and have to ease up to keep the scores respectable? Well. it just doesn't happen = any more. The Americans are learning this game and learning fast. There is little doubt among soccer authorities up here that the United States will be a power in the game within five to 10 years if the interest continues to grow at the youth level. Mind you, there's a bunch of guys on the US National team who are going to be attempting to prove ihat they have arrived already A win is essential for either team on Saturday if they do not want to be totally behind the eight ball. As for the kids, well, this type of exchange is one of the best ways for the adults to involve themselves with kids and sport. It is the kind of exchange that very few persons have the = op- portunity of participating in, yet does so much to build up knowledge and good will between citizens of countries It may sound trite, but this type of exchange 1s tar supenor to any kind of textbook training atschool {wo baitliny it rey ake bole CC iy’ (oviye sadunee coetiede tena fade rhe viove At Coall tect oa feud st MO) vebrree "ST Haida Thermo Glass Takes the chills out deat. frien Haida Thermo Glass Ltd 40 Mountain Highway North Vancouver Bt So far the tournament has remained aloof from _ the petty detail of which side won how many games. The fun of two weekends, in- cluding the billeting, far outweighs the ‘‘winning” aspect of competitive sport. At times most of us have found it easy to be cntical of the big country to the south of us, but when you have some youngster from that country sitting at your dinner table along with your own child, it can make borders somewhat silly. It is at the Seattle ex- change level that sport serves its most useful pur- pose. THE BIG KIDS Then there are the big kids. The ones who will be taking things very seriously indeed Saturday afternoon. For Canada, it will be the change to take a major step toward the second round of the World Cup. A win will leave them with four points and only the game against Mexico remaining, while the United States will be faced with two games against the Mexicans following their visit to Canada. The locals can consider themselves somewhat fortunate that they held on for the draw Saturday night. A surpnsingly strong United States team threw everything at the Canadians in Fort Lauderdale before setthng for the tie, and for a while, it appeared that it would be simply a matter of time before the roof fell in. North Shore Pegasus) filling up one of the centre back slots. McGrane, a quiet Glasgow born, former Hamilton product, is one of the most underrated players in North America. Un- derrated by all but the players and coaches. He has been a regular with the Aztecs since he signed with them in 1977 right out of Simon Fraser. His dogged, and tenacious game has tumed more than one forward inside out as witness the job he did on Ricky Davis Saturday night. After a futile first half of trying to get around McGrane, Davis was shifted to a wing position for the second half. If you want to see a top calibre creative stopper in action, keep your eye on McGrane, number 17, Saturday afternoon. As General Manager John MacMahon put in Monday, this will be the toughest game any Canadian World Cup soccer team has ever faced. If you enjoy soccer, then you'll be at Empire.
