Protests against con- struction began after some trees in the park were cul down to clear the site. PETITION CIRCULATED Lou Kennedy, a_ local resident and one of the main organizers of the campaign against the _ firehall, threatened to put herself in front of the chainsaws if the workmen tried to cut down any more trees. An information picket was set up around the park last weekend, a petition was started, and leaflets saying ‘Save the Park’ were distributed at local shopping centres during the week. “There's no way there's going to be a firehall there,” Kennedy said. She said the people thal fought to save the park when an attempt to extend Fern Street through it a few years ago, would fight to stop the firehall going in. Kennedy 1s upset because she said District Mayor Ron Andrews promised at the time no further action would be taken concerning the park unless the residents were contacted first. No such consultation took place, she said, and residents only heard the firehall was going in after it was ap- proved by council. District officials and others who support the construction of the firehall say it will only take up “a tiny, tiny, little piece of the park.” ‘PANICKING’ Distnct Fire Chief Bob MacDonald told the News that the firehall would only take up a total of 9,492 square feet and that the training area would consist of the existing paved area. He says people = are “panicking” when in fact the firehall will improve the park He said having a firehall in the area would improve access to Sey-Lynn park and ¢ An assortment of Quality used and out of print tittes in LITERATURE & LITERARY CRITICISM Pacific Books 1135 Lonsdale North Vancouver 980-2121 would help cut down on vandalism in the area. MacDonald stressed that Bridgeman Park would not be touched and that there were no plans to cul more access roads through the park or tear down the skateboard area. “The thing I want to make perfectly clear is that we are only taking a very small portion of the park.” “We are not going to destroy anybody's concept of greenbelt,” he added. But Kennedy disagrees with this and says once the firehall goes in more and more of the park will be taken for other uses. Alderman Peter Powell said that the small area taken by the firehall will be more than replaced by land being reclaimed from the landfill site in the area. MacDonald says that the firehall is being built in an area that is not at all devoid of parks. Protesters counter this by saying that there are plenty of other good sites in the area where the firehall can be built without using up parkland. At Monday's council meeting the subject of the firehall was raised again, but the only action taken was the decision to display maps showing the parks in the area and the site of the firehall at the next policy and planning meeting for the public to see. It was pointed out to council members that the decision to build the firehall could not be reversed at that time and there was little response to a suggestion by Mayor Bell that a public meeting be held on the subject. MacDonald said working being diagrams are just Tree lover will face the chainsaws completed for the hall and that site development is underway. He said he felt that 90 per cent of the shrubbery thar has to be cleared has already been hacked down. The firehall should be occupied by July or early August he said. ARTISTS IMPRESSION of new firehall proposed for the park will be shown at Monday's council meeting by Chief McDonald.
