West are of residents A number Vancouver more afraid of not being informed about a proposed group home than they are of the group home itself, council learned Monday night. The residents spoke out against the use of 1238 Jefferson Avenue as a group home for five mentally handicapped children mainly because some property owners within 300 feet of the proposed home have not received a letter about the proposal sent by the North Shore Association for the Mentally Hana- dicapped. “The information | heard aboul the group home was through a concerned neighbor. We have not received a letter,” Mrs. Mary Tynan told council members. She said that the association should have had a meeting with the residents -- a move which the associalion may, but is not obligated to arrange under the B.C. Community Care Licensing Act. “The house in question is small with two bedrooms and an illegal basement suite. I don’t think anyone would consider having five kids in a house that size.” Mrs. Tynan added. Mrs. told council she had just visited a group home and described it as “a rewarding expenence™ “But I still have a feeling that the action was already done in this case, all signed Mary McAndrew | and sealed, -before we were ever informed that the house was purchased,” she said. The association’s residential services coor- dinator Ray Stensrud em- phasized that “we are very open to a meeting but we don't want it to delay the process”. Alderman Don Lanskail, though, still charged the association with having “a very poor communications program”. “People are entitled to be told,” he said. Lanskail’s motion to table council’s endorsement of the group home for two weeks in order to allow the association more time to inform the neighbors was passed by a vote of four to two. ’ School closures policy | adopted for North Van A declining = school population persuaded North Vancouver School Board last week to adopt a standard poly for either closing or consglidating schools as the system may demand.
