-* ALTERNATE SCHOOL PROGRAM ” West Vancouver elementary school principals are preoccupied with “getting warm bodies and keeping them,” for their schools. . This accusation was made by Daphne Trivett at the West Vancouver School Board meeting Monday night when the ‘board met with a delegation from the Pauline Johnson Alternate Primary Program. The primary program eS offers an alternative, multi- age, family group system of education for students from Grades 1 to 3. Trivett told the meeting that in the past principals have balked at sending students home with in- formation leaflets about the alternate program. She said principals feel they risk losing students and see the leaflets as a “raid” on their student numbers. West Vancouver Superin- tendent of Schools Ed Carlin protested the idea that principals would block the information ‘seems _in- credible” and asked Trivett to tell him of specific cases where this has happened. ~ Trivett admitted that there have been no incidents this year when principals refused to pass on information to the students for. their parents but maintained that it has happened in past years. Carlin pointed out that education is to serve the YOUNG EXPECTANT FACES wait patiently for the puppet show to begin at the Lynn Valley Library. Last weekend a large group of children were treated to a presentation of ‘Little Red Hiding Hood gets her revenge’, a show that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. TRUSTEED BY CO OPERATIVE TRUST COMPANY OF CANADA children and suggested that interference by principals in the alternate program would be “highly unethical.” Dr. G.B. Purves rep resenting parents concerned with the Alternate Primary Program (APP) told the school board declining enroliment in schools has put pressure on the APP and parents are concerned that the program may not be able to continue. Purves asked for the board’s support to maintain the program and to suggest solutions to the problem of attracting children for the program. Purves said that many of the information handouts that are sent home with children are “shoved under the kitchen sink” and there 1s a problem with getting in- formation on the program to interested parents. Purves suggested adding the kindergarten level to the program but Carlin said that modifications to the program as it stands are the key to attracting more students. Carlin told the APP parents that first they should consider changing “that hippy. pervert word ‘alternate”’ saying it comes from an outdated trend of the early seventies. But Trivett said as one of the original parents in establishing the program she Quarter Pound Burger and Fries Wed. Acting Chairman Lilian Theirsch pointed out the APP has “full board support". Carlin said the board is not “cold and calculating” over the number of students in the program and in the past has given the APP the “benefit of the doubt’’’ when enrolment has not reached the required levels. Theirsch ended the discussion assuring the APP delegation again of board support.
