They had to_ learn to. ski.~“cross-country, cross glaciers, perform ava- lanche and crevasse rescue, digsnow caves and. survive — in freezing temperatures. The Venturers set out into the Diamond Head area of Garibaldi Park © on: ~ country ‘skis early morning “March 28, 1975, carrying — packs ranging from 40 to 55 _Pounds- ‘‘The early morning ; cross the occasional scream = of agony as someone discover- ed just how heavy his pack was,’ ” recalled Keogh i in his journal... The call cooperation . and adventure was made by Lord Robert - Baden-Powell, but. he cer- . tainly was not referring to ‘snow caves and freeze dried - food or recipes | for spaghetti sauce, all “of which -the Venturers faced. for endurance, TUNA SURPRISE The menus had _ been carefully planned and each day’s menu was scheduled in advance, which included tuna surprise and camper stew. ‘‘The food was usually a focal point for discussion especiaily during inclement weather, so the quantities had to at.least seem to be ample and the quality had to appear attractive,’’ one Ven-. turer noted. The quantity and appearance were not a problem since they » usually ate in “very dim light.” ‘When it was time toturn in they crawled into the. snow caves which they — built themselves. The first lesson they learned for survival was . that digging caves was a soggy business. Equipment used included full rain gear -- jacket, pants, gaitors | and ‘waterproof mitts. The entrance was -about 314 feet high: To get to the sleeping quarters, known as the platform, they had to crawl an extra six feet. One of the rooms was 4-feet high, the other was 6-feet. In ail cases they used ski. poles to poke an air vent from the ceiling of one corner of the room until ‘it penetrated the surface of the snow. (See diagrams) LIFE EXPERIENCE Besides these diagrams the V.enturers had a series of per annum Patoteheter 2% photographs for which they were complimented by their District Commissioner . Les Strike who presented the award to them.. ‘‘The excel- lent photography, the daily maps of your explorations at high altitudes. and sketches of your snow shelter con- - struction all combine to show @ very clear. picture of the expedition.
