Drop-in Summer Storytime: Teens seek adult acceptance From previous page al rule they are withdrawn. Those who do not get consistent messages form an ambivalent view of life, seeking reassurance when threatened but not necessarily feeling secure about the response. They are worriers whose anxiety masks their strengths and reinforces any concerns they have. As a general rule they are anxious and emotionally volatile. The final group is those who, through mistreatment or severe adversity, are simply unable to respond to any attach- ment expectation. They are confused about relationships and tend to fluctuate from one of the three previous models to another. Asa general rule, they are unpredictable and find it difficult to get into a routine that gives them comfort. I have, of course, simplified some very complex issues and there is much more to it than I have summarized here. However, there are two important points that need to be made. The first ’ is that early bonding between children and caregivers is very important and the second is that continued efforts to form an attachment, even into adolescence, can make a significant dif- ference. Don't believe for a minute, that as a teacher, coach, relative or friend you cannot make a difference to a child whose par- ents may not have the understanding or the ability to bring about the necessary attachment themselves. Although no teen would ever admit it, they are secking adult acceptance and attachment constantly, and once achieved, may live a better life as a result of a positive influence long “after that influence has waned directly. — Graham Hoovkey is the author of Parenting Is A Team Sport. . your Fall activities. i is also a grat place to shop for the best prices in sports equipment, computers, school supplies and omch more.
