EARLY this year, North
Vancouver District gave
Lionsview Seniors’
Planning Society a small
grant from its
‘Millennium Fund, in
order that we could
honour those residents
who will be 100 years
old or better this year.

Since we know that many
older people five in North
Vancouver City and in West
Vancouver, we asked for and
received support tor this pro-

+ ject from these councils as
well,

Vith the help of readers of
this column and people who
work in care facilities, we dis-
covered that there were 37
centenarians living in North
and West Vancouver, 35 of
them women.

Since we started this pro-
ject in January, five of them
have, unfortunately, died.

nized as Seniors’ Week in
B.C., all three North Shore
municipal councils paid special
tributes to their oldest resi-
dents.

On Monday, June 5, at the
beginning of the regular West
Jancouver Council mecting,
Mayor Ron Woud presented

five pcople with certificates
signed by the mayor.

. Volunteers from Lionsview

gave each persor a red rose,
and we charted with them and
their families over tea and
cookies,

Those of you who watch
council meetings on Channel
4+ may have seen the presenta-
tion. Photographers were on
hand to record the occasion
for the centenarians’ family
records, One centenarian had
four generations of her family
present, including a grear
grndson who was one of the
photographers.

Since three of the tour
North Vancouver City cente-
narians reside in Evergreen
House, Mayor Barbara Sharp
visited them on June 9 in the
Bell-Irving lounge, which is
named after Dr. Robin Bell-
Irving, who, for many years
was medical director of

Evergreen House. Incidentally,

Dr. Bell-Irving is a valued
member of Lionsview’s board
of directors,

At Capilsno Care Centre
(formerly Beacon Hill Lodue)
three centenarians were hon-
oured on June 22, the 104th
birthday of Norah Simpson.
We heard stories of their expe-
nences in different parts of
Canada, including Vancouver
Island, Yukon, and the early
days in the Dollarton area of
North Vancouver. Local politi-
cians and an RCMP off
red serge added to the festive
atmosphere.

On June 29, Mayor Don
Bell presented eight centenari-
ans with certificates at their
home at the Kiwanis Care
Centre in the Seymour area,
And in early July three resi-
dents of Cedarview Lodge will
be honoured.

munity, so our committee,
chaired by Margarct Kelly

Margaret Fulton Centre), has
arranged for informal mectings
and presentations to rake place
at times when family members
could also be present.

This has been a fascinating
experience for all of us. We
have heard stories about lite
on the North Shore many
years ago and about living
through two world wars, Our -
community is fortunate to.
have so many residents with
such a wealth of experience
and knowledge to pass on to
future generations,
