12 - Friday, December 4, 1987 - North Shore News SCANDALS RESTAURANT Lower Lonsdale eatery’s cuisine gets good grades SCANDALS, 127 LONSDALE AVENUE, NORTH VAN- COUVER, 987-7222 FROM GREASE has risen gourmet aspirations. After three months of intensive scouring, Scandals management has exorcized the deep-fry demons of the Lonsdale Village Cafe, the former occupant of the restau- tant's Lower Lonsdale address. The result is a pink-toned res- taurant with a homey atmosphere and good continental cuisine. Thus far Scandals has remained unavoidably obscure for most diners, who, while roaring south on Lonsdale, are unaccustomed to seeing culinary oases on the west side of the street’s 100-block. But a new Scandals awning, which is scheduled to be il- luminated any minute, should help attract the curious and the hungry. Until the awning provides a suitable navigation point, longtime residents can easily find the restau- rant by its attachment to a genuine North Shore landmark. Dan ayer Joffre’s Barber Shop is one of the few bonafide short-back-and- sides barber operations left in this or any other area. The shop’s owner and namesake, Joffre Brondgeest, has, in a career that began in 1933, beheld more North Shore scalps and trimmed more North Shore neck hair than any of his modern-day blow-drying | counterparts. Passers-by can see the 72-year- old Joffre, like Lloyd the barber from Andy of Mayberry, holding forth each night from one of his barber chairs, iced refreshment in hand, giving his views on the world and the issues of the day. Inside Scandals’ 40-seat front- end, patrons will find a clean, bright restaurant, friendly greeting from owner Karin Essinger and an interesting menu. : Essinger, who owns My Place Cafe in the 200-block East Second Street, has launched Scandals as a more formal, yet equally social cu- linary cousin of My Place. Her new restaurant’s menu of- fers an appealing selection of soups, salads and appetizers; all below $6, and an equally enticing line-up of 10 entrees, all under $13. A recent dinner sampling of the restaurant’s culinary wares, with full family Table Hopping review team, satisfied most tastes and met with all approvals. A Scandals Caesar Salad ($3.95) was good. It had the prescribed heap of fresh Romaine lettuce, homemade croutons and vigorous Caesar dressing. Elsewhere in the appetizer round, | sampled an order of four Angel King Prawns ($5.95). The popular crustaceans came fried in a light beer batter dusted in coco- nut slivers. An accompanying mild mango sauce provided another ex- otic touch and complemented the dish very well. The wee man, who has developed into.a discerning pasta specialist, took on Scandals Pasta of the Day ($7.95) and was im- pressed with the cream, tomato and shrimp fettucine delivered. I followed my prawns with a Szechuan Chicken ($10.95). My wife ordered Scandals Creole Prawns ($12.95). The chicken was an excellent, spicy dish that came simmered with red peppers in a soya and sherry sauce, topped with peanuts. Its hot pepper bite helped the dish live up to its Szechuan billing. My only quibble was a dearth of chicken meat. My wife's prawns were also deemed very good, their creole sauce vibrant with the color and culinary soul of southern American food. Entrees came with large deep- fried potatoes, broccoli and baked tomatoes. For dessert we indulged in the Heisse Liebe (English translation: Hot Love, $3.25), which is sure to impress al! those hot lovers of rich ‘afters’. The dish is a simple com- bination of vanilla ice cream dous- ed in a hot raspberry sauce. Scandals for dinner represents a quantum leap above its predecessor and adds another good See Restaurant Page 13 Now Open For Breakfast Monday to Friday 8 a.m. Special of the Week 2 Eggs, Toast, Homemade Hashbrowns, Coffee or Tea §2.99 Featuring Homemade Jam & Muffins |Baeaak Gide Café v0 925-1945 1812 MARINE DR., WEST VAN.
