Pet warning issued

THE SPCA warns the public that a number of
canine distemper cases have recently been
reported in the Lower Mainland.

Distemper in dogs is extremely contagious, spreading
through the air via particles from affected animals. It can be
transmitted through sneezing, for example.

The only way to prevent distemper is through up-to-date
vaccinations. Young puppies and non-vaccinated dogs,
therefore, are at the highest risk for contracting distemper.

The possible symptoms of distemper are runny nose and

eyes, fever, listlessness and vomiting, progressing to seizures
and eventual death.
. The SPCA strongly urges pet owners to vaccinate pets,
and keep these current. Contact a veterinarian or the SPCA’s
director of animal welfare, Yvonne Savard, ar 879-5494 to
ensure a pet is adequately protected.
