SQUAMISH RCMP called off
Thursday the search for a 13-
year-old boy missing in the
- Howe Sound area since the
weekend.

Seven people were rescued by
the Coast Guard Sunday evening at
Anvil Island when a canoc trip went
awry in extreme winter weather

- conditions.

Eight canoeists, based at a
Porteau Cove wilderness camp for
young offenders, were reported
overdue on Sunday afternoon. One
of the canoeists, 13-year-old Adam
Gibson remains missing.

Gibson left the rest of the group
before the Coast Guard arrived. He
was . described by police as
“resourceful.”

Members of the North Shore
‘Rescue Team (NSRT) and. the
North Shore Lifeboat Society
(NSLS) were among about 100
searchers involved in the effort to
locate Gibson over the past three

"days. Said NSRT spokesman Ross

Peterson, “This is quite a different
type of search. It involves a subject
who does not want to be found. In
this case it’s more of a stealth game.
The teams are looking for signs of
where he wag and hopefully put the
pieces together. He may have been
hurt.”

Added NSLS vice-president
Bruce Falkins, “As of last night, we
felt we had searched as far as we
could on the water.”

Searchers believe Gibson may
have taken a dinghy from Anvil
Island.

Said Squamish RCMP Sgt.
Dwayne Wetteland, “We’re still
hoping that he made it to the main-
land.”

On Wednesday the search effort
involved seven vessels, two heli-
copters and 40 ground personnel.
The search covered an area from
Point Atkinson to Cowan Point and
north up Howe Sound to Britannia
Beach. Auxiliary Coast Guard ves-
sels conducted night searches in an
attempt to spot outdoor fires or
lights on in cabins.

Police consulted with search
crews and family members before
ending the search.
