iF YOU'RE fond of traditional
German wines with their higher
residual sugar, lower alcoho!
and low-impact style, this is a
bargain. St. Rochuskapelle is the
least familiar “grosslage” (never
mind) in the Rheinhessen area,
overshadowed by an overabun-
dance of indifferent “liebfrau-
milch” and buckets of back-
woods “Niersteiner.”

Fruity, yet there’s a hint of
something other than riesling in
the mix, hitting a lighter note.
Just as well: it’s perfect for light
sipping in the afternoon when
you haven’t had a fot to eat and
a glass of 14% alc. plonk would
have you snoozing on the floor
getting lint up your nose and a
bad case of carpet-face.

Bingen is a nice town — a
relief from the wine-tourist trap
of Rudeshiem on the opposite
bank of the Rhine.

Wines from the Valdepenas
region are lightweight, affection-
ately forward and made for peo-
ple who believe in “seizing the
day” and gathering rosebuds
when they’re in bloom. Even
some of the heftier Spanish
wines seem to lose their legs
after 10 years and Vaidepenas
aren’t made to last, but to enjoy.

At seven years, this one won't
get any better, but it’s a great fall
barbeque wine at a bargain
price, Bring on the fatted calf,
wear a large bib, carry a sharp
knife and a big glass.
