All that remains to be done now is to dispose of the historic vehicles that people once paid money to see. The announcement of the closure was made recently by Darlene Marzari, minister of tourism and culture, avd David Zirnhelt, minister of economic development, small business and trade. The NDP provincial govern- ment announced earlier this yeac that declining attendance and rev- enues at the Cloverdale facility required its closure. Ziernhelt said the government subsequently advertised for com- munity groups to make proposals to keep the museum in operation without incurring the same losses. “While the proposals were quite creative, each community group required extensive government subsidies to continue the opera- tion,”’ he said. “‘Al proponents 44 The final destination of John Lennon’s Rolls Royce remains under consideration. 99 stressed that preservation of his- torically significant’ vehicles must be a clear priority. | completely concur with those suggestions."’ Marzarit said Royal B.C. Museum staff have been directed to identify which vehicles should be included in a core collection — the most historically significant group — and which might be soid or transferred. The intention of the government is to return those vehicles which have strong historical ties to communities or regions in B.C. to those areas. ‘Although most of the vehicles of lesser historical significance were purchased for display al Ex- po ‘86, some of them were do- nated,’ she added. ‘‘In the case of the latter, we will make every effort to ensure that the donors are consulted before any decision is made regarding the sale or dispersal of those vehicles.”* The final destination of John Lennon’s Rolls Royce, donated to the province in 1986 by businessman Jimmy Pattison, re- mains under consideration. “While it is a cultural icon of the ‘60s and '70s generation, it does not figure significantly in the economic or social history of B.C.,’* Marzari said, "92 TROOPER XS 4x4. “JHE BEST IN ITS CLASS” . —f2 ic RODEO 4X4 a "$20, 990 "92 SPACE CAB 4X4 1989 TROOPER Be aware of brake trouble signs SELL-OUT 34,000 km, 5 PRICE $ 1 5,980 CALL FOR Sens. . **t HAVE noisy brakes and nobody can do anything about them.’’ This complaint usually refers to the squeal or scraping sound sometimes generated by the new, semi-metallic brake pads and _lin- ings now in common use. This material, which does away with hazardous asbestos previously us- ed in brake linings, also offers superior frictional and heat dissipating qualities. Safety and ecology, in addition to longer service life, are among considerations affecting automotive design these days. Through advancements like bet- ter friction materials and anti-lock braking systems, the brake life and performance have significant- ly improved. Driver reaction time, unfortu- nately has not kept pace with im- proved performance of the brak- ing system, notes Car Care Canada of the Automotive In- dustries Association of Canada. Nor has there been a significant improvement in public attitude about preventive maintenance. One survey of 1,000 consumers showed vehicle neglect is on the rise even though nearly half of the motorists ranked brake failure as their number one fear among driver emergencies. In face of this, less than 20 per- cent identified brakes as a system to be checked regularly. Whether or not your vehicle’s brakes are inspected periodically, as they should be, be aware of the signs of brake trouble and take corrective measures at once.
