2@ — Wednesday, July 1, 1992 - North Shore News Norwesters hosting track meet THE TREVOR Craven Memorial Track and Field Meet will take place at Minoru Stadium in Rich- mond during the evening of July 3 and at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby on July 4and 5. The meet is hosted by the North Shore’s NorWesters Track and Field Club and will include competition among junior to masters athletes. Participants are coming from Australia and throughout B.C. to take part in the event. Trevor Craven was a NorWesters Track and Field Club member and North Shore resident who was killed in a car accident in 1986 when he was 16 years old. Provincial Squad which includes two North Shore resi- dents came out with fists and feet flying to win 28 medals, including 13 golds. North Shore resident and former National Champion Phil Derbyshire made an ex- cellent comeback after ankle surgery by capturing the men’s Black Belt Heavyweight sparr- ing division. And National Middleweight champion Ren Bagley, also from the North Shore, had a classic match in the final of the Team Sparring division against Chris Walker of Alberta. Bagley scored with a double leg take down and stamp kick and two unstoppable head kicks to win by three full points. Duuble gold medal winners in Kata (style) and Kumite (sparring) were Graig Kiyoro in the junior blue belt division, Peter Gonzales in junior Black “ Belt and Tanya Ling in the women’s black belt divisions. An excellent performance by Mike Skimizn captured the gold in the men’s Black Belt kata. Approximately 250 athletes competed in the championship.
