Dubberley House

THIS IS one of five houses
in the 1700-block of Ches-
terfield that were here a
couple of weeks ago, but do
not exist today.

All that remains are the two
evergreens that frame the house in
this picture, but no buildings.

Of all these houses, I chose to
illustrate this modest Craftsman
bungalow. Although it was not an
important heritage building, nor
included in North Vancouver Ci-
ty’s heritage inventory, it was a
fine example of the Craftsman
style prevalent at the time. It is a

good example of our vanishing
heritage.

In order to make way for higher
density off Lonsdale, early modest
homes such as this will inevitably
disappear to be replaced by
townhouses and garden apartment
developments.

Built in 1911 for a family
known as Dubberley, it exhibited
obvious symmetrical massing,
twin-squared porch columns,

double bay windows, side gabled
roof with attic dormer (triangular
eve brackets) and exposed rafter
ends.

The cedar shake cladding was
probably original.

It was a strong, solidly built
bungalow that had seen a better
past, and its yard was well tended
and it had been lovingly cared for.

{t had undoubtedly welcomed
its owners home at the end of a
long hot summer’s day to sit and
relax in the coolness of its porch.
