“" armored. tanks, oe Quebec, Dear Editor: I was inierested to read your editorial of Sept. 20 concerning the poor rating B.C. received from the World Wildlife Fund for our provincial government’s lukewarm attitude to the en- dangered species campaign. This is only part of the dismal picture. The government of B.C. has failed to take adequate action + to crack down on poachers of wildlife and in particular has faii- ed to enact regulations to prohibit the killing of bears for their parts which are being traded commer- cially to satisfy the demand for them in the Asian ‘“‘medicine’’ trade, which momentarily is akin to the drug trade. This disgusting trade is prohibited by jaw in Stop trading bear parts Alberta, the Yukon and California. In 1990 1 wrote a letter to then Minister of the Environment for B.C., John Reynolds, protesting B.C.’s lack of laws prohibiting taking bears for parts and the ac- companying parts trade. John Reynolds replied to me in a letter dated May 30, 1990 which said in part, ‘‘I can advise you that regu- lations related te the selling of bear parts have recently been reviewed by Ministry of Environ- ment staff. Several recommend:- tions for changes to existing regu- lations are being considered for -implcmentation this year.” Weli, 1990 has come and gone and as usual nothing has been done by the B.C. government to rectify this situation. Perhaps the ‘Collins is consistent Dear Editor: While reading the North Shure News recently, the thought occur- red to me that after all these years I have never seized the opportuni- “ty to ‘compliment you on your ‘ choice of humor columnist. This particular humorist rarely ceases to amuse, his gibes ever witty and comical. In short, Mr. Doug Col- lins never disappoints! ; Though his subject matter is limited, it is always consistent. He . ever passes up an opportunity to ‘lampoon those right-wing buf- foons,. those anachronistic: ultra-: ‘conservatives. whose tyopic views fill- other more conscientious souls with, revulsion and the ‘need to , idefecate. His satirical words, tike “demolish such typical conservative opponents as: Native Indians, im- “>. migrants, homosexuals (constantly : Teferzing to them in juvenile terms roll over and | WASP/ — as “homos’” — nice touch), the women’s rights movement, social- ists, and especially Liberals (a word now firmly entrenched in the conservative dictionary of vulgar language). Mr. Collins is able to emulate the coarse writing style and insen- sitive speech commorily associated with those he parodies so weil; one would swear he was one himself! May Mr. Collins continue to expose the -ampant ignorance, the anti-humanist stance, and the mental masturbation of the far right-wing. The best of health to him, may he continue as a wat- chdog, standing ever-vigilant, . preserving those values which ‘our “civilization is built upon: liberty, fraternity and equality — for everyone, W.3.
