Scheduled to start Sept. 13, the two-year Shipping and Marine Operations diploma certificate course will give students insights into the complexities of rnarine in- dustries and international shipp- ing, and provide successful gradu- ates with the basic tools needed to tap the wide range of opportunities available in the industry both locally and around the Pacific Rim. Program coordinator Capt. Rod Hesp said the program, as an en- tire course, is unique in B.C. it was put together, he said, after a growing need for people trained in international shipping and marine operations related- businesses was identified both by Transport Canada’s recently released International Shipping and Marine Management report and local shipping industry frepre- sentatives. “It’s a very specialized kind of industry,’? Hesp said. Canada, without its own mer- chant marine, uses foreign vessels to ship its various products abroad. The course, which is open to high school graduates and mature students with related work experi- ence, is broken into first and second-year components, Hesp said the first year core program will cover such subjects as business communications, how ships and ports operate, cargo and shipping and marine law. A second-year elective program allows students to specialize in a chosen area. It focuses on hazard- ous cargoes, marine insurance, in- ternational trade, free trade and import-export infrastructure. The course can be completed on either a full or part-time basis. Hesp said career opportunities for graduates range from positions as ship's agents and stewards to postings in customs and freight forwarding. Cost of the two-year program is $1,500. Space is limited, and the deadtine for application is mid- July.
