7 - Friday, March 3, 1989 - North Shore News Reader defends Hunter's stance Dear Editor: Captain R.H. Hall, who criti- cized Bob Hunter’s excellent anal- ysis of whales in captivity, ob- viously knows little about the sub- ject. His letter is loaded with of- fensive attacks on Hunter’s abili- ties and integrity in an attempt to try and get his weak arguments across. Captain Hall first makes the statement that ‘‘the knowledge that has been amassed, on killer whales particularly, can only be obtained by studving them in an aquarium type environment.’” This is garbage. Numerous studies have been and are being carried out in the wild. Has Captain Hall never heard of people like noted cetologist Dr. Paul Spong, who literally Jived among the whales in an attempt to understand them better? And what does Captain Hall mean when he says that watching whales in the wild for most people is nearly impossible? Has he never heard of the guides on Vancouver Island, in California and other parts of the world who make a liv- ing out of introducing the public to whales in their own environment? Captain Hall also states that zoos and aquariums are the last line of defence for animals which are near extinction. Has he never heard of international organiza- tions like Greenpeace whose members are right now risking their lives to prevent the Japanese whaling factories from slaughter- ing Minke whales in the Antarctic? What about The Whale Project, a consortium of organizations which have joined together to urge the Canadian government to support a commercial whaling moratorium? Before he publicly ridicules knowledgeable people like Bob Hunter while making absolutely no reference to organizations trying to save whales and study them for no monetary gain, | suggest Captain Hall study his subiect a lot more thoroughly. Trisha Mason-Bell, North Varn. Where's the overpass? Dear Editor: At the risk of inviting another threatened resignation from North Vancouver-Capilano's ‘‘card- board’? MLA, I must ask why the recent announcement about the Upper Levels Highway only dealt with the Lonsdale intersection. Is it not just as important to build an overpass at Westview? Both of these intersections are dangerous and annoying. One overpass without the other would be a half-baked remedy, but then we expect that from the current government.
