Shakes are thicker and rougher,
giving the roof that Pacific Coast
look.

Shingles are slimmer and
smoother and have a more in town
appearance. Both types of roofing
are durable; when maintained and
treated they can last for years.

Tile roofs offer another elegant
choice in, roofing. They offer the
least maintenance of all roofing
types. A pressure wash every few
years is al! that is needed to keep
tile roofs looking good.

Asphalt shingle manufacturers
have introduced some very inter-
esting designs to simulate other
roofing materials and in color
ranges that appear limitless.

The inclusion of bay windows
and window seats in many new
homes reflects the return to the
traditional style but large windows
are also included to provide greater
amounts of natural light. New
home owners want a bright, airy
feel to their homes hence the ap-
pearance of skylights in kitchens,
bathrooms and stairways.

This does not necessarily mean
bigger heating bills or more noise,

most windows in new homes are
double or triple-glazed to keep the
warmth in and the noise and
draughts out.

Windows, however, do not
allow for much privacy. To over-
come this problem, many designers
have taken to using glass blocks,
popular in the ‘fifties and early
‘sixties. Blocks of glass have the
advantage of letting in the light
while maintaining the homeown-
er’s privacy so they are often used
where ordinary windows are too
revealing. In many new con-
dominium developments, glass
blocks are used as facings onto
open corridors or communal
courtyards.

Designs for doors and en-
tranceways combine the desire for
traditional style and more natural
light. Attractively panelled doors
fitted with brass fixtures are com-
mon in new homes but these doors
are often framed by windows to
provide natural lighting for the
hallway beyond. Leaded or paned
french doors are used not only for
their elegant look and charm but
for their ability to allow the max-
imum amount of light into a room.
