Light fixtures coordinated with
the style of your house will not on-
ly enhance its appearance but will
provide light for safety and conve-
nience.

Most projects are casy to do
yourself but require a knowledge
of simple electrical wiring. Hire an
electrician if you’re not familiar
with the basic techniques.

Select fixtures that match the
look of your house. For contem-
porary homes, opaque, white glass
or diffusing plastic fixtures work
best. These obscure the bulb,
reduce glare and soften the overall
effect.

For more traditional settings,
choose clear glass lanterns with
low-wattage decorative bulbs.
Lanterns lose their charm if the
exposed bulbs are too bright.

Remember outdoor lights are
exposed (o the elements, so make
sure all outlets and cables are
waterproofed and underground
systems covered with at least 12
inches of topsoil.

more difficult to recognize.

To direct light evenly, mount a
pair of wall fixtures, one on cither
side of the door, 66 inches from
the threshold.

With modern fixtures, use dif-
fusers at least six inches wide and
55-watt bulbs. With traditional
lanterns, install recessed fixtures in
the overhang to provide surroun-
ding light and allow the lanterns to
glow softly to create atmosphere.

For maximum flexibility, vary
light intensity with a high/low light
switch. Use the high option only
when you are expecting visitors.

Mluminate driveways with 6 feet
(min.) post lights stationed 50 feet
apart, and a few feet back from
the driveway cdge. Tall fixtures are
Iess easily damaged by snowplows,
and are fully visible when backing
up an auto.

Again, use 25-watt decorative
bulbs in clear glass lanterns or up
to 100-watt bulbs in diffusing glass
or plastic fixtures.

Lower post lights (less than three
feet) are better for long pedestrian
paths and walkways. Select fix-
tures with louvres that direct all
light below the horizontal and use
40-watt bulbs. Position the lights
30-36 feet apart, and near steps or
abrupt changes in grade.
