THIS 1S the time of year when North Shore residents experience more power outages than normally. Many factors can be responsible for these outages, but often trees are directly or indirectly related. Wind and snow on their own can cause power outages, by breaking or shorting out power lines. Tree Talk By Brian Fisher Tree contact with powerlines is a big factor. Trees blowing-in the wind can come in contact with overhead wires and cause a short. ’ This in turn may cause the power lines to overload and the power company protective system to take over. Powerlines, on the streets, like those in our homes, have circuit breakers or fuses and under certain circumstances they wiil blow. They are not however, as sensitive as our home circuit breakers. The electrical power system is designed to try to continue to deliver power even when there are minor difficulties, for instance, a small branch falling on the lines. These minor problems wil! not blow circuits, otherwise we would have power outages all of the time. This is one of the reasons that extreme caution is required when doing tree work near power lines. Tree companies who are authoriz- ed by B.C. Hydro to work near energized power lines have special operating procedures to protect the workmen and the lines. There are several different types of power lines and we should be conscious of them and their prox- imity to our trees. Trees and power iine wires do not mix and in addi- tion to power outages, there is real danger created when trees touch powerlines. Trees can actually become energized and a person could suf- fer electrical shock just standing next to or touching the tree. The power lines that run from the street lines to our houses are called service wires. These carry 220 volts and could cause a nasty shock. The clearance of these lines is our responsibility. Check to ensure that there is a good three feet (1 metre) of clear- ance between the line and any branch or part of any tree. If you de not have this clearance, have a qualified tree service company clear it for you. Never let children (or anyone else, for that matter) climb ia a tree that is close to a power tine.
