THE NORTH Shore Information and Volunteer Centre is aiming to recruit Expo 86 volunteers. The 10,000 people who volun- teered at Expo will each receive a message on community volunteer opportunities along with a card wanted to teach a class, work with people, or beconie involved in a certain organization voluntecring offers the opportunity. A surprising number of volun- teers are working people. Some volunteer positions allow for even- ing and weekend schedules, which dispels the myth that volunteering is only for non-workers. Volunteering provides a rewar- ding experience for those who desire to help, but can also be training and job orientation in a 35 - Sunday, October 12, 1986 ~ North Shore ¢ irws jumnteers prospective employment field. For many Expo was their first volun- teer experience; but several others gave up community volunteer positions to work at the fair. Those wanting more informa- tion can attend So You Want to Volunteer, a free session which will give an overview of agency oppor- tunities and expectations, the per- sonal experiences of volunteers, and information on how to choose a suitable placement. The program will be held at Carson Graham School on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre refers people to a variety of non-profit com- munity-based organizations on the North Shore. A volunteer’s skills and interests are evaluated in a personal inter- view, and then a referral is made to an agency which has registered a request.
