Carpentry creativity

THERE IS A new kid on the
block at North Vancouver's
Capilano College.

The carpentry program
from Vancouver Community
College has re-located from
its East Vancouver site to
newly renovated premises on
the Cap campus, near the
Second Narrows Bridge.

Department Head John
Ehwalt says the new location
is particularly attractive to
men and women on the
North Shore.

“In fact, we think we can
draw people from Deep
Cove right up to Squamish,”’
he says. ‘‘With the economy
starting to pick up, con-
struction looks like a good
job bet for a person starting
out.’*

The program accommo-
dates 60 students in two
levels.

Carpentry basic teaches
students about foundations,
framing, interior and exteri-
or finishing, millwork and
blue print reading.

At the end of four months
gtaduates could take on jobs
as an assistant in residential
construction, handle carpen-
try maintenance and repairs,
or do remodelling work.

The second, more advanc-
ed, program, carpentry -
‘building construction, gives
students skills in concrete
form construction, steel stud
and drywall construction,
and advanced blue print
reading.

Graduates of this five-
month program can compete

successtully for jobs in resi-
dential and commercial
framing, concrete formwork
construction and renova-
tions. They are also ready to
take indentureship as ap-
prentices in the industry.
