Beware of ‘malaria risk countries’

LARGE PART of the world is infested
with malana. This disease is mosquito
transmitted and can be deadly serious. The
Government of Canada publishes a complete list of
the countries where you are in danger (‘‘Malaria
Risk Countries’’) and it’s available free from your

local Health Unit.

What is truly important -
and I quote, ‘‘There is today
no ideal chemoprophylactic
agent that will provide com-
plete protection from malaria
in all areas of the world.’’

The problem arose when one
of the four species of malaria
parasites, falciparum,
became resistant to the most
commonly used drug, chioro-
quine. Probably the best
alternative drug, Fansidar,
isn’t necessarily the answer,
either. Neither is Proguanil
or a combination of drugs.

alternatives has been well
documented,’” says the
government bulletin

many of us who have been to
Brazil, Venezuela, the Philip-
pines, China or India or who
may be planning to go. Cer-
tain areas of these popular
countries are in danger.

Another problem is that
any aircraft may have to
make an unscheduled landing
in a danger zone. What can
the traveller do to protect
himself while waiting in the
airport for an ongoing flight?

The most dangerous time
for mosquito bites is between
dusk and dawn or during
rainstorms. In the hope that
the airport was regularly
sprayed, I[’d forego the sight-
seeing and stay inside.

Buy the strongest mosquito
repellent you can find, keep it
in your hand baggage and use
it Liberally. Check out your
nearest sportsmens’ supply
company that carries
fishing/hunting gear and
they’!] provide you~ with
something a lot stronger than
“Off.”

Keep as much of your soft
pink skin undercover as you
can. Jeans are tough and so
are denim shirta with long
sleeves. Unfortunately, that’s
not always top choice in
travel wear.

If you know that you’ll be
in a danger zone, find out
from the health unit about
the degree of danger. See
your doctor and get a
prescription for the ap-
propriate medication and
take it religiously. It must be
started 1-2 weeks prior to
departure, during your entire
stay and for six weeks after
your return. Follow the doc-
tor’s orders even to the exact
tume of day that the tablet
must be taken, working out
the vaniations in time zones
carefully

If you're pregnant or

allergic to sulpha drugs OR
under six months of age, stay
home. You can’t take the
medication.

And, if it’s any use to you:
Lebanon is completely free of
Malaria.
