Interior most overlooked

AUTO UPHOLSTERY and carpeting take a ter-
rific beating at the hands... and feet, of passengers.
It’s not constant contact with the fabrics that
causes wear, but the amount of dirt and grit allow-
ed to accumulate between the fibres.

Dirt and grit have ex-
tremely abrasive properties,
and when the particles are
allowed to remain in or on
fabrics, the sharp edges can
actually cut through the
fibres, causing premature
wear. Floor mats, because
they act as a barrier, and can
be easily removed for clean-
ing, are very useful tools in

Most of all, don’t be afraid
to vacuum regularly. The
abrasion caused by the
vacuum head and suction is
harmiess compared to the

damaging effects of the dirt
particles.

Vinyl and leather are also
subject to wear, mostly caus-
ed by exposure to sunlight
and dryness. Tired leather
and vinyl will begin to fade
and lose lustre. In advanced
cases, it might begin to crack
and split from the combined
effects of heat and dehydra-
tron. Several products are
available to help fight these
conditions, but generally,
they act as lubricants only.
The surfaces must be cleaned
thoroughly before the pro-

duct is applied.

Most. cleaning procedures
can be done as necessary,
depending on the amount of
use the car gets, the climate,
and the severity of the pro-
blem. More and more
drivers, however, are turning
to yearly professional interior
maintenance tO ensure a
relatively constant level of
care.

A comprehensive profes-
sional intenor protection
treatment makes good eco-
nomical sense and helps keep
a car’s interior looking hand-
some for much longer. It’s a
good investment for today’s
car owner and should be an
established part of any
automobile maintenance
program.
