She wanted to better understand the concept of equal pay for work of equal value. She asked how one can compare the value of work in her example of the relative worth of attendants to an accident victim. Who was the most valuable in caring for this injured person? Would it be the nurses, the ambulance’ drivers, the dietitians, etc.? Those of us studying the issue of equal pay have also been discussing the very same questions. The members of EPIC (Equal Pay Information Committee) feel that equal pay addresses Safety in gas masks? some very important questions in our society. Firstly, it has made people conscious of the value of all honest work, be it manual, clencal, professional, or whatever. In my union, we have outside workers who per- form the invaluable tasks of garbage pick-up. snow removal, repairing roads and sewers, and parks main- tenance. We also have inside workers who work in schools, librames, and in municipal halls dealing with the intricacies of running a municipality — from typing lo processing, to planning. The community cannot exist at an acceptable standard without any of these workers and jobs, yet there is a great disparity in the starting rates Dear Editor: Re.: Letter to Editor from Wendy Salo, May 12. (“Stop harassing Hooker”) Ms. Salo seem to be looking for someone to blame for all the press at- tention to her employer, Canadian Oxy. Well, don't blame the neighbours! We didn't write the Beak Report. Unfortunately we a \ (Oy te SOLE and outside workers. (We call the starting rate the BASE ENTRY RATE.) The base entry rate of a beginning outside worker in North Vancouver is ap proximately $11 per hour. This is considered to be the lowest possible wage needed to maintain a household. At the present ume, the base entry rate for an inside worker beginning a job is below $8 per hour. A straightforward way of dealing with such inequities is to establish a base rate for all workers, in recognition of the value of the job and the need for all people to make a living wage. An equitable base rate would eliminate wage discrimination and would begin to provide for inside just READ it. Perhaps she could blame the Fire Department for being concerned that Hooker doesn't hke to report in- cidents at their plant. Maybe she could blame _ the Community Hazards Task Force Report, which called for the relocation of the plant or blame the workers at adjacent industnes for getting overcome by gases CONGRATU' ATONS NICE workers with a decent living wage allowing them, both men and women, the dignity of being self-supporting and independent. It would eliminate job ghettos and the labeling of some work as inferior or of lower status. And it would put nourishing food on the table and pay the rents in many a_ female- headed household. 1981 was a big year in establishing the concept of equal pay or equalizing the base rates. Municipal workers are continuing to discuss the merits of bringing up the wages of all workers to the entry level for an outside worker. The concept is just and timely. Ms. Salo states she feels safer at the plant. Is it because that’s where all the gas masks are?
