Who is Charles Marquis de Beauharnois? Chances are you probably don't know that the answers are the left foot of the rabbit and the Governor of New France 1726-46. But chances are that West Vancouver Secondary’s crack ‘Reach for the Top’ team does. ‘Reach for the Top’ is a popular CBC-TV high school quiz show which started out on radio about 20 years ago and involves. a zone, provincial and national championship. Team members Maria Balz, Jim Chesko, Graham Croft and John Whyte with alternate Don Bobert are reaching for the top having won the Lower Mainland zone finals which gives them a spot in the B.C. finals to be taped in Victoria starting March 24. The taped show will be aired sometime in April on CBC-TV. Coach Barry Lindahl, social studies teacher. describes the students as “a great bunch of kids. They're really a team” and feels they will do well. To prepare for their quiz challenges the team assimilates the con- tents of 15 or 20 trivia books. “They have amazing memories” comments Liadahl. “They answer questions no one. should know.” The team meets al noon- hours once a week to go through one of the books but three weeks before a show they meet every day. Team members also take books home to study and each one becomes an expert in one field such as art or science. They also have occasional practices with the school’s French ‘Reach for the Top’ team (the program is called Genie En Herbe) coached by Martha Veerman. Immediately before the show the team goes through a mini-game to get md of their nervousness. Vice- Principal David Barker who coached the team for five years, points out that ap- pearing on the show helps students who are in music and theatre feel confident in front of an audience and camera, as well as providing intellectual challenge. Vancouver Playhouse ac- tress Pam Koropatnick is a former West Van Secondary ‘Reach for the Top’ member. “It’s the only game where academic students can compete,” comments Barker. “The purpose is to have fun and that’s how we have approached it.” For winning the Lower Mainland zone final the team received $300 which goes into an ongoing scholarship and if they win the finals it’s $500. Principal John Williams points out that academic honors are not new to West Van Secondary = students. Craig Lyle won first place and Jane Farquharson second place in the 1981 Commonwealth Essay Contest for B.C. Jane's essay went on to take second place for all the Commonwealth. In the 1981 Provincial scholarship results West Van students received the greatest number of scholarships of all the three West Van high schools. West Van Secondary “caters to all aspects of students” explains Williams because the school also has industrial shops, a theater and a sports program. Last fall Anita Botnen spent three weeks in Russia as part of the Canadian Gym Team competing in the World Championship. And what with a Shakespeare course, along with Spanish and German hopefully being added to the curriculum next year, watch for those West Van Secondary ‘whiz kids’ reaching the top again.
