According to Superin- tendent of Schools Ed Carlin, the proposal calls for the establishment of Hollyburn Elementary as a primary school, kin- dergarten to grade three, and the transfer of the French immersion program from Ridgeview to Hollyburn. “The strength of the proposal will be the con- solidation of the in- termediate program in the core area, more effective use of space and separate space for the French immersion program,” Carlin told the meeting crowded with parents of Hollyburn students. But he admitted that consolidating intermediate students at Ridgeview while Extended Patrons of the Bay Moor- ings Steak and Seafood House in Horseshoe Bay will soon be able to eat and drink from 11 a.m. to midnight. If such cooperation was not forthcoming, the school board might have to do it on a mandatory basis, using cross-boundary transfers, he added. The idea is to encourage transfers from larger to small schools and discourage transfers going the other way. “The success of the proposal depends upon no ours for restaurant agreement last week, council referred the matter to the Community Services Advisory Commission, which subsequently recommended adoption of the amendment calling for longer hours of operation. Hollyburn Elementary is West Vancouver's oldest school, which may have been one reason why parents present at the meeting showed no inclination to hurry the new proposal along without further study and comments. “Uncertainty is causing the drift of students away from Hollyburn, so we need a solid plan for the school's future, allowing the school to survive,” said one parent. For about nine = years parents of MHollyburno students have had intimation of possible closing of the school. Roger Fox told the board that Carlin'’s proposal covers the problem of a “reverse snowball effect’’ at Hollyburn where small class sizes could get even smaller. “The space situation at Ridgeview and the class size potential at Hoillyburn Troller Pub’s request for extended hours — but in- sisted there is “a difference between a pub and a restaurant.” Voicing strong support for the amendment, Alderman Diana Hutchinson remarked, “It’s the same old story of east vs. west and we can’t divide our municipality hike this.” 2 Dinners for the Price of 1 your choice ot Pilet of Sole Pan toed uatd gatder forcowe Dako ieee sorved wilh potato aot ont The CFINGE Ggretette Nap 5 vane tate ery ane ssaahaacd —— --—-Ofter expires May 15 --— - Sundowner Restaurant Simitlhes north of Horseshoe Bay (pleane phone for cose wattons) \NSFERS NomailMonday — Postal facilities There will be no mail throughout British Columbia deliveries on this holiday and the Yukon, will be with the exception of special} closed on Monday, May 19, delivery items. in observation of the Vic- Full postal service wilj tora Day holiday. resume Tuesday, May 20. Chairman Audrey Sojonky said the board as yet had po alternative to mandatory closed cross-boundary transfers as far as Carlin’s proposal is concerned, but she emphasized that, in her opinion, the proposal itself fails to answer certain questions. “What about the impact on the surrounding area when grades five, six and seven are moved out of Hollyburn?” Sojonky asked the meeting. “Our data is past-oriented. We need information on Hollyburn in the future.” A number of parents present at the meeting volunteered to conduct a survey of the Hollyburn area to determine whether or not the numbers of school-age children in the area are increasing.
