C6-Wednesday, March 26, 1980 - North Shore News Any bargains in Britain? Britain at bargain prices? The last time I looked at my shrinking dollar, I figured I needed all the help I could get! After all, it’s been over a year since I visited England — and how I miss that place. Despite all the joys of writing a column, doing the research, answering telephone calls and letters from readers — I'D RATHER BE IN ENGLAND! My first visit to England was memorable! First, the long flight scared me witless. In my head was the firm idea that, because I'd dreamed of England for so many years, something would foul up. When I saw the hedgerows and fields of Britain for the first time, as-we hovered over Gatwick airport, I couldn't believe my luck. As our June flight took us over Baffin Island (didn’t look a bit like my geography book in grade 6), Greenland (a ‘huge icecube in a sea of iceburgs), Iceland (more of the same), I hoped that the pilot was in full controi. With the Hebrides, came breakfast, total fatigue and a shakey fear of the unknown. After all, I'd never been this far away from home before. Jet lag? It meant that I couldn't sleep when I should and dozed when I shouldn't. For all of a day, I hated myself for leaving home and * safety — until “the magic of Britain” took over. Now after approximately 14 visits, the magic is still there. I can walk from the Strand to Marble Arch (one long hike!) and remember to look to the right instead of the left! There will be daffodils, soon, in Hyde Park and every Sunday an art auction. I hang onto my purse very tightly in Petticoat Lane and listen to the sales pitches. The hamburgers and hot- dogs are awful, but what the hell? ; I get this crazy longing in the spring. Every spring! It’s my own personal spring fever when I look at pigeons (and remember the flocks in Trafalgar Square), eat fish passport hotos while you wait North Shore Darkroom 1527 Lonsdale 988-9813 OEEEEESEEEEES VANCOUVER Catering and convention facilities tor up to 1,000 guests 2 GOLDEN 2 CROWN RESTAURANT Honoured by Canade Manpower sppomiment 03 Advanced Cooking Instructor DIM SUM LUNCHES GOURMET DINNERS Open every day 122 W. If I could choose, everyone would visit England once. Brian baulked at the idea. “T've no interest in England! Let’s go right to some sunny place with a beach.” I persevered “You'll love it!” “You're nuts!” “Four days — that’s not too bad, is it? Just a glimpse. I know you'll hate it but wiil you do it for me?” He gave in. And, in a day and ae half, stopped grouching and came up with remarks like: “This isn’t bad!.” How about spending a cou- ple of hours in Westminister ELLIE HENDER MANAGER #112-Kapilano 100 PHS Rew Babs + (2) S)S)S)5)S)S)5)S)S) Abbey then have dinner at that pub?” I bleed for those on fixed incomes who planned to spend their retirement travelling! It seemed possi- ble in the late ’60s. And, in the early °70s. Now? Costs are yetch! Britain is doing its best. The British Tourist Authori- ty is ready to publish a “Bed and Breakfast” guide to Bri- tain (expect it in a few weeks). Also check out the BTA manual “Insiders Bargain Britain”. They vary greatly, depending on the type of fare (including charters) and the time of year. It will cost appreciably more to travel in July than it will in April. Airlines are not allowed to advertise fares departing from foreign “gateways” such as Seattle, Chicago or Detroit BUT travel agents have this information. These flights may or may not be a bargain! Ask yourself: How much is it going to cost me to travel to the USA? Will I have to pay accommodation for a night or two? What is the exchange rate between flights American/Canadian dollars? When you combine this with the uncertainties of a long road trip before you get aboard, you may be asking © for trouble. Foreign gateway fares are ideal for the person who can get to the airport cheaply, fly “standby” and doze in the airport lounge until the flight is ready to go, even if that means a couple of days!
