54 - Wednesday, May 5, 1993 - North Shore News NV pub hosts soul music revue NORTH VANCOUVER rocker Bryan Adams got his Start in the music world by playing a venue in the 1400-block of Lonsdale Avenue called Whispers Nightclub. Today another North Van- couver resident is trying to break into the music world at the same fonsdale location, now Jack Lonsdale’s Pub. Robert Abernathy, 30, a native of North Vancouver, and his seven-piece band Memphis Slax, will play Jack's every Saturday in May. The group plays a combination of Memphis soul music with ‘70s funk. Their latest single is / Don’t Wear Blue. Abernathy, a Carson Graham Secondary graduate, was heavily influenced by gospel music. He says there’s a little bit of Spirituality in all of Memphis Slax’s songs. At 17, Abernathy 2arned fame by appearing on American Bands- tand’s spotlight dance. During the mid-!980s, he went to London for five years to work as a model and was subsequently featured in such magazines as Vogue. In 1990, he was nominated as Vancouver's Tdale Model. Playhouse honors Lillo DEEP COVE director Larry Lillo has been named Direc- tor couver Playhouse Theatre Company. Turing his five years at the helm of the company, Lillo in- creased the subscriber base to 10,400 from 5,800 when he began the post, exceeding all previous records. ‘Ht can truly be said that the excitement and success of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company at this time is due to Larry Lillo,’’ Carol Slater, chair- man of the theatre’s board of governors, said in presenting the award. . “Larry’s creative vision, his dedication ‘to. theatrical quality -and generous, nuturing support for those who produce it, and his unigue understanding of this community and the ;ole the Playhouse plays within it, have drawn the finest artists and man- agers to the Playhouse.”’ Lillo officially retires June 30, but will continue to work with in- coming director Susan Cox in an advisory capacity.
