HIS BEING the summer of our political discontent, it's fitting that I’ve been to many political events — this week's was Laura Markin’s “Midsummer Delight,”’ an elegant party at II Barino for the Judy LaMarsh Fund. Judy LaMarsh was the first fe- male cabinet member of a Liberal government and made her mark as a champion of seniors and health care. In 1984, due to the demand for more women in government, her fund was created to offer financial help to women who wish to be elected Liberal MPs. Good idea. As Jean Chretien says, “We will not have an equitable society or ensure eco- nomic growth if we leave some people off the team.’’ (More amusing is the remark of former Ottawa Mayor Charlotte “66 Doug Collins will have a field day with the ‘Burnaby-K: ingsway roster... .9F Whitton:Whatever women do, ‘they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good: Lucki- ly, that's not difficult.) - Sheila Copps was the main at- traction at the party. What a star. “ She talks too loud and she has no patience for sexist remarks but here, what you see is what you get. With most politicians, y you hope they're working for you. With ‘ Capps, you see a capable person who takes her job seriously. Clever; too, | always ask politi- cians dumb questions to see if I can get embarrassing quotes out of them. Didn't work. - And, due to her Hamilton up- bringing, her Italian is as flawless as her French — plus she sings one mean Ave Maria. : Knowing how hard successful women can be on each other, | had to ask about Kim Camphell. ‘Sure enough, they are not doing lunch. Ever. Copps thinks Campbell’s an elitist who's always trying to save people from themselves -- a ‘ widespread belief which Campbell can’t shake despite all the baby- kissing. On Campbell’ 's greeting of Boris Yeltsin at the Japan Surnmit, Copps sniffed, ‘tif you stuck a Russian script in front of me, | Louise Aird - BRIGHT LIGHTS could read it too. Anybody could.” | mentioned Campbell's singu- larly single life. Louise The Pest: “talk about ‘lonely at the top.’ Copps:You wouldn't say that about Pierre Trudeau.” LTP: “Lots of people would.” Copps: ‘When you enter public life, you expect trade-offs.”” Copps Aide: “Excuse me, we'd rater not talk about Kim Camp- bell.” About sitting beside John Crosbie at the PC leadership con- vention, Copps said she’s always cordial to him (7???) and that during their three hours together, she .chatted and he grumbled. No wonder CTV's Valerie Pr- ingle was having so much fun. Copps is optimistic about the election, citing Jean Chretien and Paul Martin as two of our most capable leaders. “The time when politicians were respected has got to come again. That's a challenge, but Jean Chretien has the integrity to bring honesty into government. “The Tories think that chang- ing one player will change the body politic — and that Van- couver is a sweetheart seat. “But B.C. has the strongest slate of women candidates in the country and the Liberal Party is a fantastic team which will change Canada.” Copps was given a Spawnin, Salmon bow! — which she sai reminded her of Crosbie — from ‘North Van's Khot la Cha, and | went off to see who else was in the packed room. There were just a few ar- ch-feminists there — here’s a direct quote: ‘If | were his wife, I'd take my biggest kitchen knife and cut off his... Whoa!
