Water charges rise in NV District RESIDENTS OF the District of North Vancouver face an annual increase of 15 per cent in their water user charges. For a single-family residence, the annual charge jumps from $79.44 to $91.11. District council voted recently to amend its Waterworks Bylaw so that the new charge can take effect Jan. 1, 1988. According io Mayor Marilyn Baker, part of the reason for the increase is to pay for the frequent breakage of the aging asbestos- cement pipes in the district. ““We were into the tune of some $412,000 in uzexpected pipe breakage during 1987,’’ said Baker. ‘‘It simply wasn’t budgeted for and we were not in a position of ignoring that. It's part of tne whole question of infrastructure ead one which municipalities throughout the province and this country have recognized is in need of upgrading and replacement.” According to district staff, a majority of the older piping in the district is made of asbestos-ce- ment, but staff maintains that this does not present a health hazard, except when the pipes break. Some Contributing Writer older pipes are also made of iron and this presents a problem because of rusting. Ald. Joan Gadsby was opposed to the water charge increase. ‘‘Fif- teen per cent is just too much in my view," said Gadsby. ‘‘Individ- ual residential taxes increased substantially, that is enough of a hiccup for people to deal with in 1927." Ald. Ernie Crist supported the increase. ‘‘Ninety-one dollars in Mmy-opinion is not excessive and especially when you think of some parts of the world where they’re less fortunate than we are and they pay that much in one month.”’ Said Crist: ‘No one iikes to in- crease water rates...the facts are that in the District of North Van- couver water is required by each and every resident and it is a fact of life that the water mains break." | DAVID CRUISE | ALISON GRIFFITHS | i. of -FLEECING THE LAME THE INSIDE STORY OF THE i _ VANCOUVER | STOCK EXCHANGE "will be autographing their Runaway Best Seller at 2nd floor Lonsdale Quay Market 984-3381 y. _.
