A21 - Wednesday, December 16, 1981 - North Shore News > The 60 Cadets of the 103rd “Thunderbird” Air Cadet Squadron of North Van- couver are culminating an active fall program with a Christmas party today. The Squadron officers, in- structors, and members of the sponsoring committee will join in the festivities by serving the cadets at the party. The 50 percent Cadet membership increase over the past year, with high attendance levels, is a I SE?ETE SE DRIER OL OI OES reflection of the esprit-de- corps created by the in- teraction of interested Cadets, dedicated adult staff and committee members. This enthusiasm is the result of carrying out the principle “Increased knowledge brings increased responsibility and opportunity.” What better way is there to carry out the three aims of the Air Cadet -organization: develop good citizenship and leadership in young men and women 13-18 fitness and stimulate interest in flying. The 22 cadets who have joined since September have already been immersed in the junior level training program consisting of drill, citizenship, leadership and general aviation subjects. Most have also chosen one or more optional training activities that interest them. First aid, adventure training, small arms, and hunter safety are some choices. The 20-cadet band under the direction of the new band- master David Overgaard is also popular. Glider and power flight familiarization due toa ad- verse weather was somewhat restricted during the past months although interest many participants. It en- courages young people to make the best use of their leisure time both actively and creatively. The senior cadets, besides participating in many of the above programs, also have attend specialized summer camps. Of course, they participate in the ad- ministration of the Cadet organization.
