Preparing for the slippery season SNOW IS in the air so it’s time to think about winter driving. Young Drivers of Canada has some tips to help motorists get safely through this slippery season. Get prepared. Check your an- ti-freeze potency and top it up. Check your tire pressures so you have maximum traction. Check your windshield washer reservoir. And put some booster cables in the dunk with a small bag of “*kiety litter.”’ After stast-up, turn on the defroster —- then clear off the snow and ice from the car. the Remember to clear snow off the hood or you'll be driving into a blizzard and off your boots so your foot doesn’: slip on the pedals. Steer your wheels straight to get under way. Then keep moving. Look well ahead — at least 15 to 20 scconds ahead — to ‘‘read”’ traffic, lights and congestion. Keep a minimum of four se- conds from the car ahead and use your rear-view ’ mirror often so you can see and escape the crash coming from behind. Adjust your ‘“‘point of no return’’ approaching intersections. And use the neutral gear (or ‘North Shore declutch) when slowing down to a stop, especially if the engine is cold. Using that kitty litter will help give you traction if you're stuck. When braking, threshold brak- ing works best but ‘‘feel’’ for it carefully. Brakes lock up much sooner on icy roads. Watch if your car begins to brake plane and skid. In a skid, look and steer where you want to go. Planning a good route ahead of time, slowing down, looking well ahead and often behind, expan- ding travelling space ahead, and smooth control inputs are the keys to safe winter driving. Blood alcoho! levels subject of WITH EVERY 0.02% _in- crease — the equivalent of about a drink an hour for an average adult in blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level, a driver’s risk of being killed in a single- vehicle crash almost dou- bles, according to a recently released Amcrican study. The study. carried out by researchers at the Insurance [n- stitute for Highway Safety, com- bined fatal accident report infor- mation with data from a national roadside breath-testing survey to new study study the relationship between driver BAC levels and fatality risk. Researchers found that even drivers with BAC levels as low as 0.02% — one-quarier of the legal limit in Canada were more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than drivers who hadn't been drinking. At levels between 0.02 and 0.04%, the risk was 40% greater than for non-drinking drivers, while drivers above 0.15% were more than 380 times as likely to be killed in a single-vehicle crash.
