WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Maureen Curtis At its Sept. 25 meeting, West Vancouver District Council referred to its parks and recreation advisory commission a complaint about the “degradation” of the hiking trails on municipal Jand below Cypress Park. Although many of these trails are restricted to hikers, cyclists have succeeded in destroying many sec- tions, according to West Vancouver resident Peter Osberg. He described a rather complex process. First the cyclists bypass the steps and drainage logs that control ero- sion. Next year, the steps wash out and the water runs down the center of the trail where bikers skid their rear wheels. Another year and the steps are partly or completely gone and “the bikers’ wheels are tearing up the roots of the trees,” Osberg described. “In the last three to four years, steps that lasted decades have been replaced by gullies three feet deep,” Osberg said. He suggested that West Vancouver follow the lead of Cypress Park and restrict access to hiking trails and let the bikers get their recreation on old logging roads. Coun. Allan Williams was. in agreement. “It seems mountain bik- ers are doing to our mountain sides what motor bikers did 20 years ago,” he said. Masor Mark Sager defended mountain biking as “an excellent sport.” DOWNTOWN TOYOTA welcomes .back Ken Stephenson.
