French classes down Expanded immersion enrolment called for A.WEST Vancouver parent group wants the West Vancouver School Board to allow the admission of students who live outside the boundary area to local French immersion class- es in an effort to increase declining enrolment and revenues. WEST VANCOUVER SGHOOL BOARD By Glen Anwick Marg Humphries, local representative of Parents For French, appeared before the board and educational com- mittee members on Monday to ask for a special policy change to enable District 45 to draw French immersion students from elsewhere. Humphries told board members that competing pro- " grams, class size minimums and the loss of late immer- sion classes have made it difficult to maintain the “administratively viable” level of two separate classes per grade level. She added that as is the case with foreign students, immersion pupils could be revenue generators for the school district. Boundaries for overseas students have been waived so why couldn't this happen for immersion students, she asked. Assistant superintendent John Player. told Humphries that the shrinking enrolment of students in French immersion is an overall trend for other school ’ districts i in the Lower Mainland. . Board chairman Ken Haycock thanked Humphries. for her request but added there are ‘‘a lot of things” to think about before trustees could consider changing the Olicy. P He said the board will likely rule on the matter by the endof March. Meanwhile Ecole Pauline Johnson in West Vancouver has become the first elementary school in District 45 to undergo a public scrutiny of its accredita- tion process. The school passed easily with a positive recommendation from its study team. Chris Mann, an elementary. school principal from Richmond, headed the external team reviewing the cur- riculum, teaching methods and found the environment and atmosphere at the focal French i immersion school to be “a caring and cooperative one.” The school teaches 308 students from kindergarten to grade 6. Mann complimented the teachers and sup- | port staff at Pauline Johnson ‘for being | a “dedicated : - group” who have created an environment “conducive to - learning.” ; ; She added that teachers and students enjoyed work- ing in the school and parents felt confident in and strongly supportive of the school’s classroom instruc- tion. ; Overall strengths of the school as documented by the... study team include: students demonstrating a solid com- mand of the French Language; classrooms featuring the latest in technological equipment and programs; high” academic standards; respectful interaction: between. teachers and pupils, and a bright and pleasant facility. . Trustee Jean Ferguson praised the school for being the firs to open itself, to the accreditation serutiny. SATURDAY MARCH 12- 7PM : The 8th Annual Duck Race takes place down the Capilano.
