[(P alert residents on crime prevention Fight B&E, bad govt. cheques and fake money frauds THE FOLLOWING includes some crime prevention tips concerning home burglaries: CHECK YOUR LOCKS Door and window locks in most homes today might keep out some- one who just rattles the knob, but they won’t stop a determined or professiona! burglar. In almost half of residential bur- glaries, the thieves just walked in through an unlocked door or crawled in an unlocked window, according to the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association. Every exterior door should have a deadbolt lock with a one-inch throw. If you have a key-in-the-knob lock, install an auxiliary lock — a verti- cal bolt, cylinder deadboit or hori- zontal-bolt model. If you have just moved into a new house or apartment, re-key the locks. You never know who may still have old keys. Secure sliding glass doors with commercially available locks, with a rigid wooden dowel in the track, or with a nail inserted through a | hole drilled in the sliding door- frame and projecting into the fixed frame. Lock double-hung windows by sliding a bolt or nai} through a hole drilled at a downward angle in the top corner or the inside sash and part way through the outside sash. Buy window key locks at the hardware store. PARK © J ROYAL MEDICAL CLINIC Unit 560 Park Royal Shopping Centre, North West Vancouver, B.C. COUNTERFEIT BILLS Merchants on the North Shore should be on the alert when dealing with Canadian $20 bills. A number of counterfeit $20s are now in cir- culation with several different serial numbers being used on these bills. Things to look out for on coun- terfeit currency: @ the green discs or planchettes cannot be scratched off without damaging the note; @ the poor paper quality (smooth texture); &@ the portrait is not lifelike and is absent of fine details especially around the eyes. forehead, hairline DECORATIVE FABRICS and cheeks; @ the absence of raised printing particularly around the border of the bill and around the word “CANADA.” If you are in doubt, compare the suspicious $20 to a known genuine bill. If you have any questions on this matter. call Cpl. G. Slobod of the North Vancouver RCMP fraud unit at 983-7414. If a merchant believes that there is a fraud in progress, call 9-1-1. Losses incurred on counterfeit currency are losses that the mer- chant may have to absorb. CHILD TAX CREDITS Many of these kinds of cheques are being stolen directly from the mail and the numeric total is then altered to a greater amount. When accepting and cashing these cheques or any government cheque merchants should: @ know who your customer is and ask for secondary identification; @ not accept the cheque if it appears to have been altered in any way.
