Utilizing features like cab-for- ward design already evident in Chrysler’s award-winning LH family cars, the totally new Neon compact sedan will arrive at a dealership near you in January of next year as a 1995 model, It will replace the Dodge Sun- dance and Plymouth models, and will simply be badged as a Dodge or Plymouth Neon (one name). “Neon is another example of the risk-taking, who-said-we- can’t-do-this Chrysler platform team attitude,”’ said Robert J. Eaton, chairman and chief execu- tive officer at Chrysler. “Only with our new corporate culture of continuous improve- ment and platform teams that em- power and challenge our people could we produce an affordable, yet truly desirable, unique Amer- ican small car, without a foreign partner and at an efficient invest- ment,’’ Eaton added, In total, the Neon program represents a US$1.3 billion in- vestment, which — aside from the Neon model itself -- includes two assembly plants, two new body- panel stamping plants, and one new comiponent plant. ‘The Neon will feature a 132- horsepower, 2.0-litre 16-valve engine, with a more powerful dual cam version to arrive in about a year, along with a coupe version. Chrysler spent much time studying the potential buyers’ wish-list to ensure that the Neon incorporated all the features ex- pected from small car customers.
