16 - Sunday, December 13, 1992 - North Shore News Fashion grads show latest work GRADUATES OF Vancouver Community College’s (VCC) fashion arts program presented their latest mini-collections in a fashion show at the Commodore Ballroom last Mon- day. Fiat Mode I! featured the work of 20 up-and-coming designers — representatives of every graduating class since the program’s inception in 1986 — whose fashions ranged from ethnic and elegant to the theatrical and the outrageous. The show kicked off with a trio By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter of toddlers bouncing down the runway in color-splashed separates from Ellen Vaillan- court’s Babysport label, available at specialty stores across Canada. Cosy cotton fleece rompers, leggings, tunics, hooded jackets and little dresses with flared hems were presented in primary color blocks of red, yellow, blue and “green. “Dinosaur bump styling” showed up on skirt hems and pant side seams. Debbie Schreiber, one of the program’s first graduates, pres- ented the whimsical costumes she created for street performers at Vancouver's First Night celebra- tions. Designed as take-offs on period costumes, these included a canary yellow Mad Hatter top hat paired with a Jimminy Cricket tailcoat, an orange conehead and a pink ‘‘bread basket’’ skirt, all in foam and wire covered with rip- stop nylon. North Shore designer Deirdre Flavin showed ‘‘wearable art’’ cotton and silk coats hand- painted with breakfast motifs — bagels and coffee mugs — and ar- tist’s brushes and paints. Louise Evison, a regional final- ist in the prestigious 1992 Smir- noff International Fashion Com- petition, presented her winning design and her menswear-inspired Funkadetegance collection for fall/winter '92, available in Van- couver at Mecca. And West African-born Ishama Herbert debuted her Nubian Touch line for spring/summer "93. Drawing on her culture, Herbert showed unisex white cotton sepa- rates with vibrant orange patch- work-patterned accents, and Ikat-printed traditional sarongs and tunics. The highlight of the evening came when an aging Elvis, outfit- ted by designer Caro! Goetze, took to the stage. Decked out in the requisite jewelled ‘‘weightlifter’s’’ belt, white flare pants and matching jacket, The King tore up the run- way to the beat of Lool: at Me, a song written especially for the show by I. Braineater creator Jim Cummins. A_ hand-painted, thinestone-studded Elvis portrait on the jacket back, Mexican pompon fringe, black soutache trim and gold glitter completed the look. The show was held to raise money for fashion arts bursaries with proceeds from the door and a raffle being met by the provin- cial government dollar-to-dollar. ‘For more information about VCC’s fashion. arts certificate program offered through Continu- ing Education, cal! 443-8380.
