MAILBOX whats a Mey ng strike BCFC ‘disregards’ human life Dear Editor: The B.C. Ferry Corporation’s (BCFC) night sailing plan plainly shows that the ferry corporation and its principals harbor a total disregard for human life. Why is BCFC luring all truck traffic back to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal with a half price “carrot’’? Only ‘fast year truck traffic was removed from the area to the Tsawwassen terminal due to the deaths which occurred when a loaded dumptruck slammed into.a parked van with passengers inside. At the Gleneagles schoo! public meeting, when asked for a copy of their emergency plan for the Horseshoe Bay termina! and the surrounding community of Horse- shoe Bay, B.C. Ferries PR man Bill Bouchard was ‘unable to pro- duce proof that the ferry corpora- tion even has an emergency plan. What effect will this have in the event of a major chemical spill, an accident involving multiple deaths? in an attempt to find some logic in BCFC’s decision to lure truck traffic back to Horseshoe Bay, BCFC CEO Frank Rhodes was asked at a subsequent public meeting if anyone has ever been killed from a runaway truck at the Tsawwassen terminal. His answer CONGRATULATIONS to VEL JOHNSTON of COQUITLAM trom all participating sponsors of CIRCLE CRAFT'S end annual Summer Craft Fair held at Granville Island JULY 3-6. Vel is the winner of Tre Wesmin Baysuore Vancouver getaway contest. Brought to you by: tat Granville #888 [sland was “‘no."’ Rhodes. replied ‘‘yes’’ when asked the same question of the Horseshoe Bay terminal, ‘‘Then why not run night sailings out of Tsawwassen?’ queried one resi- dent. Rhodes. thought for a mo- ment and answered coldly, “Because we can only sail out of Tsawwassen 22 hours a day but we can sail from Horseshoe Bay 24 hours per day.” I don't know about you, but 1 place more value on human life than a measly two hours’ sailing difference for financial and politi- cal gain. Martin Ernst West Vancouver Dublin woman seeks news Dear Editor: Perhaps you couid help me. For more than 60 years I wrote to my friend, Mrs. Nan- cy Hill, who lived on Duchess Avenue in West Vancouver. She and her mother left Dublin, Ireland for Canada about 1931. We have always kept in touch since then. Christmas 1990, however, was the last time I heard from her. I wrote her from London in November 1991, and again Christmas 199!, but no reply. When I wrote again on Jan. 20, 1992, the letter was return- ed by the post office marked “‘deceased.”” I would dearly love to know when and where she died, and what caused her death. Please help if you can.
