46 — Wednesday, December 4, 19S1 - North Shore News Volleyball team looking forward to great season THE VOLLEYBALL season is now in full swing at Capilano College. The women’s team played a trio of matches last weekend, dropping the first two against New Caledonia and Cariboo and winning the last against an aggressive team from Selkirk College. By John Dafoe Contributing Writer Capilano fell behind Selkirk early, losing the first game and struggling through the second. In the second game, with the score 63 in Selkirk’s favor, and a yellow card warning, Cap tock a time-out to regroup. The time-out proved effective as Cap started a rally that saw the score tie 9-9 and then continue to a Cap win, with Naney Cripps spiking the game winner. The match was now tied at one game each, and Capilano found themselves down 10-2 in the third before starting a scoring drive. Cap’s Suzanne Wheatley started the rally by serving three points, aided by a good set and spike routine orchestrated by Cripps and Sabrina Signoelli. The serve then see-sawed back and forth _ With the Cap team scoring in pairs and Selkirk failing to capitalize on their serves. : With the score 11-12, Cherie Baker served an ace to tie the CAPILANO COLLEGE SPGRTS score and Cripps followed’ by spiking the next two points. Selkirk regained the serve with the score now 14-12 in Cap’s favor but could not add to their total. Wheatley then finished Selkirk off with another good serve. Capilano now led two games to one, then Selkirk chalked up another big lead on Capilano, on- ly to have it erased by a Pumped-up and confident Cap team. The score was tied at I1 and Wheatley served three straight points before the side Jost serve. Selkirk called a time-out but Cap regained the serve and Signoelli spiked the match-winning point. The Cap team has a solid core of skilled players and it looks like they may have a good season ahead of them. Middle blocker Cripps is a natural team leader and has all the necessary skills. Wheatley and Baker have excellent serves and Signoelli’s spikes are accurate and hard. Front line blocking by Rachel Derkson and Cripps resulted in several turn- overs and points in this match and Winnie Siu can be counted on to handle opposing team’s serves. eee In other college sports action, Carleton College of Minnesota defeated -Capilano College women’s basketball team 73-31! in an exhibition game played Satur- day night at the Capilano Sport- splex.
