Friday, September 13, 1991 - North Shore News - 19 HOME & GARDEN i NV guilt-maker wins nat’l honors for work Gail Hunt receives Quilt Canada award EVERY SO often, the ques- tion of whether tapestry and quilting qualify as fine art gets raised. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter Opinions on the subject will continue to vary. There will be those who fight to elevate the forms from mere craft; others will continue to relegate them to a less worthy position. People like North Vancouver quilt-maker Gail Hunt will keep the debate alive. This summer Hunt's en- vironmental-inspired quilt was chosen from 100 entries to win Quiit Canada’s national award. The annual competition is the on- ly national juried show of quilts in the country. Hunt, a former home economics instructor, says Cana- dian quiltmaking isn’t getting the kind of attention it deserves. “Canadian quiltmaking is not as developed as American quiltmaking,’’ says Hunt, who has created more than 20 quilts. ‘I think it’s part of an inferiority complex of Canada. On the North Shore, for example, we’ve got at least 200 quiltmakers that I know of.” Three years ago Hunt enrolled in her first quilting class and never looked back. ‘‘It (quilting) sat- sifies me in its precision and creativity. Quiltmaking is not cre- ative for everyone, but [ want to make it less of a craft and turn it into a fine art.”” Part of that means encouraging galleries to accept quilts as a legit- imate art form. Hunt's award-winning quilt took roughly 500 hours to create. It is entitled, Wharever Man Says, That He Will Also Reap. She chose an attic window as symbolic of looking toward the future. The circular theme inside each window frame symbolizes the earth. One scene depicts the Bush-Gorbachev summit meeting of November, 1989; others show practical things people can do to save the earth. “I think that people believe they can’t do anything to change things — my quilt speaks to that. It’s a bit of a preachy quilt, but people aren’t aware as I'd like them to be. If everyone paid at- tention, we could make a huge difference."’ Hunt will demonstrate piecing tops at the North Shore Museum (at Presentation House) tomor- row, Sept. 14 and 15, from 1-4 p.m. as part of Heritage Week. Private classes at her home begin Sept. 28. Phone 985-2425 for in- formation. - a NEWS photo Cindy Goodman GAIL HUNT’S environmental quilt won Quilt Canada’s national award.
