Mort who? answered

Editorial cartoonist provides
some background for readers

READERS MIGHT be wondering
who is providing the delightful,
thought-provoking cartoons in the
expanded letters-to-the-editor and
opinion feature that appears in
every Friday’s News on page 7.
Their creator is Mort Graham.

The Bowen Island resident’s bi-
ography reads like an adventure
story. A high-school drop-out at
the age of 14. he turned down

lucrative scholarships to pursue a
career aS a baseball player. He
even signed with the St. Louis

Browns “but dide’t make a!" he
chuckles.

So, at 15, he turned to cartoon-
ing for the ‘éictoria  Times-
Colonist newspaper und later
beearae a fasion itlustrater for
Faton’s.

For five years Graham worked
in Chicago tor one af che largest
advertising agencies in the world,
this time as a writer.

He was once thrown out of
Russia for taking a photograph of
a Canadian vodka ad in Moscow’s
Red Square.

Grahan: is also the author of
two books on the Sioux and
Blackfoot Indians, and some of
his watercolor painiings of the
two tribes hang in  Calgary’s
Glenbow Museum.

He is a self-taught artist and
his ability for portraiture shows in
his cartoon likenesses.

“The trick with portraits,’’
Graham says, ‘‘is to downplay the
flaw, whereas with the caricature
you play onthe flaw.”’

His favorites to draw? Trudeau
and Reagan. John Turner was a
“‘disaster’’ because he was so
good looking.

Still active in basebali at age 58,
Graham confesses ‘“‘I can’t sit
still.””

He maintains that ‘‘artists live
to be a ripe old age because they
never quit."*
