Roofs react differently to conditions

rapidly approaching, you

homeowners who plans on
re-roofing your house this
year, How do various types
of roofs stand up to west
coast weather conditions?

Storms can cause havoc
on roofs. The tumber of
emergency repair calls
received by an established
roofing company is a good
source for reliable perfor-
mance data.

According to Brian Gale,
who works for a major
roofing company, cedar
roofs rate the worst during
heavy rain. Shakes account
for over 6&5 per cent of their

emergency calls, followed by
tar and gravel with 20 per
cent and asphalt and
fibreglass shingles with 10
per cent,

Most homeowners ure
unaware that cedar roofs
require more frequent
maintenance than other
types of roofs. Cracked,
shifted or loose shakes, as
well as debris build-up in
the crevices can cause teak-
age problems. Raccoons,
squirrels and wasps prefer
attics with a shake roof (for
easier access) as potential
nesting places.

Rodent damage accounts
for 100 to 150 repair calls
every year at Gale's com-

pany. ‘*We love those litile
rascals,'’ says Brian,
“they're our pals — they
keep us busy.”

Snow and hail produce
totally different figures for
emergency calls needed: tar
