40 - Sunday, April 29, 1990 - North Shore News North Shore neighborhood is slowly a victim of urbanization FORTY-TWO years schools were built. We watched the bush yield to pleasant small homes, we saw the beginnings of the gardens that now grace the whole hillside, and we mourned the little creek that went haywire one night and had to be corralled in concrete. All the time the bush was tetreating, the homeowners group was trudging sturdily in its wake with ornamental trees for boule- vards and yards. Roads got paved and buses ran more often than twice a day. A bank moved in, congregations coalesced into a church or two. The general store gradually gave way to shops for bread, and knitting wool, gasoline and flowers, hardware for handy and other men, a library had a dif- ficult birth. And inside of two or three years, there were strangers — one no longer knew every face in the Hightands. ‘‘Look out,’’ we said, “the city is coming.” We left the Highlands 30 years ago, and now we have come back. The pretty gardens are evidence of stable home ownership, the houses are all well tended. The area of the shops has had some cosmetic at- tention, and has spawned another hairdresser, another cafe, another bank. Mutations are evident. But of all the constants, the most striking has proved to be the greenery! What a treat for the eye, and the heart’s memory; all the trees, ev- erywhere, both natural growth and jovely contributed trees, shrubs, vines — everywhere is woodsy freshness. To be able to look out one’s back door into the heart of the primordial forest is like a dream of paradise in these days of the ubi- quitous developer. Street after street is graced with deliberate plantings, but yard after yard still shelters the tall conifers and gorgeous vine-maples and workaday alders that have shared the birds and squirrels through the years. ago we moved Highlands, before the churches were built, before the The worm has weaseled in, though, to coin a phrase. Assiduous real-estate sleuths have collected corners here and there, Eleanor Godley and great lot-swallowers have mushroomed, shoving aside both trees and others’ privacy. There’s a clutch of them at the east end of Crescentview, jostling for space, with no room left for softening trees. And another is just rising in a small peninsula at the confluence of Queens Road and Thorncliffe, thrust onto and into a once-woodsy corner that rose above the little pale creek. Where it was the norm that each house snuggled into the leafy sur- round, these places stand boldly, hip to hip, making no relationship with the background. Indeed, the background has been wiped out. Two who refused to compromise their cherished lifestyle have seen the trees between and behind them yanked up and spit out. They are now in the role of the specimen on the blotter, great rearing windowed viewpoints on three sides. Naked as worms, they cling still to famil- iar ambience and plant a few more vines. WHAT’S IN YOUR NAME? THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE! The latest B.C. statistics reveal the name MICHAEL was one of the most popular choices of boys' names. This is an excellent choice as the name MICHAEL will create very harmonious conditions in the life of one so named. It incorporates a stable and in- telfigent nature, one who can han- dle responsibility, has business and organizational ability, and one who has a logical mind. Because this name is balanced, it produces a stable and trustworthy person, versatile, and capable. You find him in positions of authority, and he can remain cool-headed in the face of calamity. He has a very keen memory, is conservative and self-confident as he learns easily and quickly. His sense of obliga- tion to help others is sometimes interpreted as being interfering, but that is not his intent. He must guard against being too know-it-all and looking down on others as not capable. When MICHAEL is called MIKE he destroys so much that is fine in the name of MICHAEL — MIKE does have a quick mind — too quick, because he »ecomes restless, never knowing just what he wants, never content and satisfied, very tense and seidom finishing what he starts. He is full of desire and ambition but he wants things the easy way. MIKE loves to work with the public, but usually talks too much and, in business, is inclined to talk himself into and out of a good position. He usually suffers with a sensitive stomach and a weakness in the fluid functions of the body. MIKE can be candid in speech, sar- castic, and very depressed at times. He has big ideas thai he talks about but which seldom materialize. As these observations are being made, a corner in the small village area has been razed and is being excavated to support the first Highlands highrise, three shocking storeys that will tower over everything around, and ~— the real root of local disaffection — will begin the metro-townification of the entire area. It is gloomily asserted that this is but the well- known thin edge. They are sure the wedge will swell and bring down other small shops. That will be the knell that tolls the end of the Highlands’ graceful There will be con- dominiums built, and apartment blocks, and traffic problems will confuse the days, and nobody wilt know anybody any more. ey THAT'S HOW MANY J CANADIANS ro, ARE z] FIGURE SKATERS G When vour aging electric water heater packs it in, B.C.
