TEACHERS helping teachers was
the theme of a proposal for a pilot
study presented by West Van-
couver school superintendent Bill
May.

“‘We need to focus more on the
beginning teachers in the district,”’
May said at a recent school board
meeting, adding that the percent-
age of starting staff will increase in
future, and that the professional
needs of these teachers will change
in the course of their careers.

“There is widespread support
for the creation of a new staff
development program,’’ May told
the board.

May recommends that outstan-
ding teachers be recognized and
‘deployed’? throughout the district
to help teachers whose perfor-
mance may be merely satisfactory.

for policy change

A petition with about 70 names
has been submitted to West Van-
couver, asking council to reconsid-
er its decision.

At last Monday's meeting of
West Vancouver District Council,
local resident Betty Duncan
pointed out that several seniors no
longer feet they can come to the

centre because of the no smoking.

After some discussion, council
voted to contact architect Robert
Burgers for advice on providing a
separate facility for smokers in the
seniors centre.
