8 - Wednesday, November 16, 1988 - North Shore News WV twin towers supported Dear Editor: This letter is to encourage your support for approval of the Nov. 19 referendum on the West Van- couver Municipal Land at 320 . Taylor Way. The undersigned are former aldermen in West Vancouver who have participated in increasing the value to the municipality of the former Municipal Works Yard land near the southwest corner of Taylor Way and Marine Drive. In 1981, the car dealership land at the corner was purchased by the municipality to complete municipal ownership of the valuable 3.5 acre site. The municipal objective, since 1981, has always been to produce a significant financial return to the municipality (outside of property taxes) through the long-term lease of this land. This concept was strongly supported by the com- munity through extensive public meetings, public hearings, council meetings, media coverage, and direct mailings to householders. The concept of no development on the site was fully discussed and re- jected. The final recommendation of a citizen’s committee as endorsed by the municipal council at the time, was to provide significant public access to the Capilano River, create a parklike entrance to West Vancouver, and permit two tower structures of distinctive design that approximate the size of the neighboring Kapilano 100 building. The Nov. 19 referendum has been created to respond to a sector of our community who now feel that no development, or limited development, should occur on these municipal lands. To vote against this referendum would remove approximately $10 million of extra revenue to our RE-ELECT REXPERIENCE AND CRAIG COMMON SENSE CLARK , N.V. DISTRICT ALDERMAN : do better in schooll # Give your child or teenager two hours a week at community. In addition, a signifi- cant payment of funds from the municipality may be required to cancel the lease established by our council, based on the previous support by our community. The loss of $10 million of reve- nue plus a potentially large cancellation payment seems an ex- cessive cost for a public park, or limited development at a busy in- tersection in the high density retail commercial area of Park Royal. To lose this amount of money that could be used to enhance our community with waterfront park access, cultura! facilities, etc. con- cerns us deeply. Please discuss the contents of this letter with your friends and neighbors — and please vote yes to the 320 Taylor Way Municipal Land Referendum.
